A Porsche is a special machine with dynamic features and a modern flair. We know how seriously you take the performance and overall quality of your Porsche, which means you want to ensure its functionality lasts as long as possible. This means regular maintenance and service, so you’re never worried about how your car can handle the road. Even so, unexpected issues can arise, and your fuel pump could be to blame. This system is a vital component to your car’s functionality, which means your car could be headed for severe and expensive repairs should it go unchecked.
Fuel Pump 101
Your car’s fuel is one of the necessary components to ensure your engine will turn over and run smoothly. The fuel pump provides fuel from your gas tank to the engine so it can begin combustion. The mixture of fuel with oxygen combined with a spark creates a chemical reaction known as combustion which provides the energy for the engine to run. So if your fuel pump cannot properly provide fuel from the tank into the combustion chamber, your car will begin to suffer.
Symptoms of a Failing Fuel Pump
It can be hard to gauge if the fuel pump itself has failed or if there is another underlying problem. There are several signs, however, that can tip you off to a failing or failed fuel pump.
Whining and Sputtering
You never want to hear these sounds coming from your car, but if you hear whining or sputtering, you can at least hone in on what might be causing the problem. Like an old door hinge, if your fuel pump has begun to wear, you’ll notice a distinct whining sound while your engine is running. This can be a sign of damage or simply natural wear. Sputtering is even more noticeable, as the normal purr of your engine will become an occasional sputter, since it is not getting a steady amount of fuel from the pump.
Car Surging and Loss of Power Under Stress
Your car should be able to keep a steady and constant velocity at all times, even when going uphill. If you’re noticing a reduction in speeds, as well as a lurching surge when you attempt to accelerate, it could be a direct sign that your engine is not receiving enough fuel to make up for the stress.
High Temperatures
If your car temperature is beginning to rise, it could mean an issue with the combustion, which is causing overheating in the engine. The fuel from the fuel pump not only supplies energy to the engine, but it also cools it down. If the engine is struggling to get fuel, it will likely begin to overheat.
Difficulty Starting or Engine Won’t Start
Fuel is one of the three components required to create the chemical reaction that makes the energy for the engine to use. If the engine isn’t receiving enough fuel or any fuel because of a broken fuel pump, it will either have difficulty starting or refuse to start at all.
Issues with the Fuel Gauge
The fuel gauge is our sensor that helps us monitor how much fuel is in our tank. If the fuel pump is damaged, then the fuel gauge will not get an accurate read on how much fuel there is in the tank. This can cause issues with running out of gas or overfilling the tank if the read fuel gauge is not accurate.
