The purpose of the water pump is to circulate coolant throughout the engine. Coolant is drawn from the radiator and passed through the engine, drawing heat off of the engine as it circulates. Once the coolant returns back to the radiator, the radiator fan then cools the fluid down before it begins to pass through the engine once again.

Coolant is typically either green or red, but orange-colored coolant could be an indicator of rust particulate in the fluid.
- The Engine is Overheating: If your water pump is not circulating coolant, then your engine is not being cooled. If your engine is not being cooled, then it will begin to overheat after running for a few minutes. Pay close attention to engine lights or any smells coming from your engine.
- The Engine Makes Unusual Noises: If you begin to hear a high-pitched whining sound coming from the front of your engine, then this could be a sign that your water pump is in the process of failing. You could also hear a buzzing or vibrating noise, which may indicate that the belt is too loose and needs to be replaced soon.
- Engine Failure: This is the final culmination of all the warning signs above, which could lead to catastrophic damage to the engine if you let the problem go this long without having the engine serviced.
