Audi’s are equipped with a catalytic converter, which is essential to the proper function of this luxurious vehicle. While the catalytic converter is thought to last the lifespan of the vehicle, there are many things that have the potential to cause this part to fail.
The catalytic converter is an exhaust emission control device that is designed to reduce the number of toxic gases and harmful pollutants in the exhaust gas that is emitted from an internal combustion engine and turning it into a less toxic gas.
Warning Signs of a Failing Catalytic Converter
The following are commonly-reported symptoms of a failing or failed catalytic converter among Audi drivers.
Some drivers experience an unusual smell coming from the exhaust system. Audi owners have reported the smell of rotting eggs coming from their exhaust. Gasoline has a small amount of sulfur within it, and when it goes through the combustion process properly, this sulfur is turned into hydrogen sulfide. The hydrogen sulfide is then expelled as an odorless gas through the exhaust. When there is a problem with the catalytic converter, this process is interrupted, and the sulfur remains in the exhaust, causing this unpleasant smell.
You may notice an illuminated check engine light in our Audi if it’s experiencing problems with the catalytic converter due to the oxygen sensor. All modern vehicles contain an oxygen sensor. When this sensor goes bad, it sends a signal to your vehicle’s electronic computer module that something is not working correctly. This will illuminate the engine light on your Audi’s dashboard.
In addition to the most commonly reported symptoms mentioned above, you may also begin to notice your vehicle experiencing poor acceleration, reduced fuel economy, or you may have a failed emissions test on your next vehicle inspection.
Common Causes of a Failed Catalytic Converter
While a catalytic converter is designed to withstand the test of time, there are many reasons it may begin to malfunction or stop working altogether.
The air-to-fuel mixture is designed to have an exact measurement of each. This helps burn fuel properly in order to ensure your vehicle runs efficiently. When the air and fuel mixture is unbalanced, it allows excess fuel to enter into the exhaust system. This excess fuel has the potential to ignite once it reaches the catalytic converter, causing permanent damage to this part.
Faulty, worn, or damaged gaskets, valves, and piston rings allow antifreeze to enter into the exhaust system. This leaves behind a coating of thick carbon soot on the ceramic catalyst.
The combustion chamber is designed to burn fuel as it passes through. However, sometimes the fuel leaves the combustion chamber unburned, resulting in the catalytic converter overheating and melting from the inside out.
In addition to the above-mentioned causes, it is also commonly reported by Audi drivers that the catalytic converter on their vehicle was damaged due to bad or faulty spark plugs, incorrect engine timing, and a faulty or failed oxygen sensor.
