Audi A4 Piston Replacement
A 2009 Audi A4 with a 2.0 turbo engine required piston and ring replacement due to excessive oil consumption and black smoke from the tailpipe at 129,000 miles. This is a known issue with early Audi TFSI engines carrying engine code CAEB.
- Audi extended the warranty to 80,000 miles on some affected vehicles, but this car had well exceeded that mileage before repairs were made. The engine had to be fully removed for new pistons and rings to be installed.
- Some early engines also require new connecting rods because the updated pistons use rods with a smaller wrist pin. In this case, the prolonged oil consumption also damaged the catalytic converter, which needed replacement.
- While the engine was out, a leaking water pump was also repaired. Timing components were replaced as part of the full engine service.
Excessive oil consumption in early Audi TFSI engines with engine code CAEB is caused by worn pistons and rings. This results in black smoke from the tailpipe and high oil use. The fix requires removing the engine and installing new pistons, rings, and sometimes new connecting rods due to updated wrist pin sizing.
This 2009 Audi A4 with a 2.0 turbo engine had excessive oil consumption and black smoke coming from the tailpipe at 129,000 miles. After confirming the oil consumption and checking the crankcase vent valve it was determined that the pistons and rings must be replaced. This is a common problem on all early Audi TFSI engines with engine code CAEB. Audi extended the warranty to 80,000 miles on some cars. The engine must be removed and new pistons and rings must be installed. Some early engines also need new connecting rods because the piston update used rods with a smaller wrist pin. In this case, the customer drove the vehicle for quite a while with the oil consumption issues and a catalytic converter was also needed.
