BMW X5, X3 Trailer Hitch

Summary

BMW X5 and X3 owners in Colorado often want to tow trailers or mount bike and ski racks, and the BMW factory trailer hitch is a solid, affordable option for doing so.

  • Aftermarket trailer hitch kits exist for some BMW X5 and X3 model years but not all, making the factory hitch a reliable alternative.
  • BMW's modern electrical system does not allow simple wire tapping for brake lights and turn signals, so the factory trailer wiring harness is recommended for towing.
  • Installing a factory or aftermarket trailer hitch requires removing the rear bumper, and in some cases a small portion of the bumper must be cut away with an angle grinder.
What is the best trailer hitch option for a BMW X5 or X3?

The BMW factory trailer hitch is a reliable and affordable option for X5 and X3 owners who want to tow a small trailer or mount a bike or ski rack. For towing, the factory trailer wiring harness is recommended because BMW's modern electrical system does not allow simple wire tapping like older vehicles.

Many people in Colorado with BMW X5 and X3 SUVs want to tow a small trailer or mount their bike or ski rack to the back of their vehicle.  There are aftermarket trailer hitch kits for some of the years, but not all of them.  The BMW factory trailer hitch is a great option and not as expensive as you might think.  If you actually plan to tow a trailer, the factory trailer wiring harness makes the process a lot smoother.  The modern electrical system BMW uses to control the vehicle’s exterior lights does not allow you to just tap into the wires for the brake lights and turn signals like you could with older cars.

Installation of factory or aftermarket trailer hitches does require removal of the rear bumper.  In this case w also had to use a cut off wheel on our angle grinder to cut a small portion out of the bumper.
