MINI Cooper Spark Plug Change

Summary

An R56 Mini Cooper came in with a stumble on acceleration caused by a faulty ignition coil. During diagnosis, the spark plugs were found to be original at 65k miles and badly worn.

  • The manufacturer recommends spark plug replacement at 60k miles, but the worn condition of these plugs shows that replacing them sooner helps prevent damage to other components.
  • Worn spark plugs put extra load on ignition coils, which likely caused the coil failure in this case.
  • All four ignition coils were replaced to prevent further failures going forward.
How often should you change spark plugs on a MINI Cooper?

MINI Cooper spark plugs should be replaced before the manufacturer's recommended 60,000-mile interval. Worn plugs put extra strain on ignition coils, which can cause them to fail prematurely. If plugs are left too long, as seen at 65,000 miles in this case, the increased load can damage other components and lead to costly repairs.

This R56 Mini Cooper came in with a bad stumble on acceleration which we determined to be a faulty ignition coil. While diagnosing we removed a spark plug and found the plugs looked original at 65k miles. The manufacturer recommends spark plugs at 60k miles, but as you can see they are badly worn compared to the new plugs, we recommend replacing your Mini spark plugs sooner to prevent damage to other components. The increased load on the ignition coils is likely what caused the coil to fail, we replaced all four coils in this case to prevent further failures.
