Porsche 964 Air Conditioning Repair

Summary

A Porsche 964 Carrera 4 owner had a persistent AC leak that required repeated freon refills each summer. A shop used a freon leak detector to pinpoint the faulty evaporator and completed a full repair.

  • Vacuum testing and dye injection both failed to locate the leak due to its small size. A newly purchased freon leak detector successfully traced the problem to the AC evaporator.
  • The repair required removing the gas tank, firewall, and heating and AC blower unit to access and replace the corroded evaporator. All blower fans were checked and the new evaporator was tested before reassembly.
  • The system was recharged with r134 freon and tested once more for leaks. The customer now has fully working cold AC ready for hot Denver summers.
How do you find a freon leak in a Porsche 964 air conditioning system?

Finding a freon leak in a Porsche 964 AC system can be difficult when the leak is too small for a vacuum test or dye method to detect. A freon leak detector that can sense freon by smell is often the most reliable method, allowing technicians to isolate the leak to a specific component like the AC evaporator.

This Porsche 964 Carrera 4 owner had continuing problems with his air conditioning system.  He had been filling the system with freon every summer and was looking to have the problem finally resolved properly.  We performed a vacuum test on his system but the leak was too small to detect.  Similar results were obtained when we tried to find the leak with dye in the freon.  We had recently purchased a freon leak detector that can “smell” freon.  We were able to isolate the leak the the AC evaporator.

We removed the gas tank, the firewall and the heating and air-conditioning blower unit.  We took out the old corroded evaporator, check that all the blower fans were in good working order, tested the new evaporator for leaks in the system and then reassembled it all.  We then recharged the system with r134 freon and tested it for leaks one more time.

The customer is now driving around with icy cold AC and is read for those 100 degree Denver days that will be coming soon.
