As a Porsche specialist mechanic here at DART Auto, I know that certain cars command a special level of respect when they roll into our Denver shop. The 992-generation Porsche 911 Turbo S is one of them. With over 640 horsepower and a 0-60 time that can rival superbikes, this isn’t just a car; it’s a masterpiece of German engineering. And when it comes to its routine maintenance, even a seemingly basic oil change is a procedure that demands precision, expertise, and an uncompromising commitment to quality.
We recently had the privilege of performing this essential service on a stunning 2022 Turbo S. Here’s a look at what separates a proper Porsche oil change from a standard one and why trusting a specialist is non-negotiable.

More Than Just an Oil Change: The Dry-Sump Difference

Unlike the vast majority of cars on the road, the 911 Turbo S doesn’t have a traditional oil pan. It uses a sophisticated dry-sump lubrication system, similar to a dedicated race car. This system uses an external oil tank and multiple scavenge pumps to ensure the engine is perfectly lubricated under the extreme G-forces of high-performance driving.
What does this mean for an oil change? It means there isn’t just one drain plug. This is a complex service that requires a specific, multi-step process to ensure all the old oil is removed from both the engine case and the external tank. It’s a critical difference that a non-specialist mechanic could easily get wrong, potentially leading to incorrect oil levels and catastrophic engine damage.

The DART Auto Process: A Meticulous Approach

When we perform a Porsche oil change, we follow a meticulous process that adheres strictly to factory procedures.

  • Preparation and the Right Ingredients. First, the engine is brought up to the correct operating temperature to ensure the oil viscosity is optimal for a complete drain. We only use Porsche-approved, C40-specification full synthetic oil—in this case, Mobil 1 ESP X3 0W-40—and a genuine Porsche oil filter. For a machine of this caliber, there are no substitutes.
  • The Multi-Point Drain. Once the car is securely on the lift, we begin the draining process. This involves removing both the main oil tank drain plug and the crankcase drain plug. It’s a patient process that ensures the maximum amount of old, contaminated oil is removed from the system.
  • Filter Replacement and Precision Refill After replacing the crush washers and torquing the drain plugs to factory specification, we replace the oil filter. The system is then refilled with precisely the right amount of fresh oil. We don’t use a dipstick; the oil level is checked electronically through the vehicle’s instrument cluster after the engine has been run and brought back to temperature. This final check is crucial for preventing over- or under-filling.

The “Service” in Oil Change Service

At DART Auto, an oil change is a gateway to a complete vehicle health check. While the Turbo S was in our care, we performed a complimentary Digital Vehicle Inspection. This is a key part of our maintenance philosophy. We checked the massive carbon-ceramic brakes for wear, inspected the tire tread and pressure, and looked for any signs of leaks or wear on suspension components. This proactive approach allows us to alert clients to potential issues long before they require a major repair, and it’s an essential part of any high-level tune-up or service.
