  • N20 and N26 2.0 turbo petrol, chain rail failure (2011-2017): The plastic chain rails were made from a polycarbonate that degrades. As they break down the chain goes slack and can skip on the sprockets. Affected cars include the 2012 to 2015 X1, X3, X4, Z4, 228i, 320i, 328i, 428i and 528i. Symptoms are a rattle on cold start, a whine, P0016 family correlation codes, and in the worst cases a stall and a destroyed engine. BMW extended coverage on the chain and the oil pump drive chain to 8 years or 100,000 miles under a class action settlement. That settlement has closed, and owners now pay for the repair themselves.
  • N63 4.4 twin-turbo V8, chain rails (2008 onward): A few seconds of metallic rattle from the front of the engine on a cold start, P0016 and VANOS codes, and metal glitter in the oil filter. The engine and transmission both come out. BMW ran a voluntary Customer Care Package in 2014 covering 2008 to 2013 cars, and that programme has ended too.
  • Timing correlation faults that are not the chain: P0016 and its siblings can come from a VANOS solenoid, a Valvetronic motor, a cam sensor or low oil pressure just as easily as from a stretched chain. There is one honest exception to everything above. The M20 six and the M21 diesel, fitted to E21, E28 and E30 cars from the late 1970s into the early 1990s, are belt-driven. Both are widely documented as interference engines, meaning a snapped belt lets the valves drop into the pistons.

Independent practice on the M20 settles at roughly every 50,000 miles or five years, whichever arrives first. We do not publish a factory mileage for it, because BMW's own figure for a car of that age is not something we will quote from memory. On an E30 or E28 the belt job is the moment to do the water pump, the tensioner and the front seals in one visit. Pulling the front of that engine apart twice is a waste of your money.
